Deep Scars

For Prayers and Promises Poems

These scars I dread

As I return broken

From a battle once dead

And long unspoken.

Again I must fight

Against my buried foe

Carelessly brought to light

From the darkness below.

I raise my banner

And ready my sword

In foolish manner

And self-righteous accord.

We met on this field

His horde gave cheer

I rose my shield

As he drove his spear.

Each step was grueling

Weighted by my armor

But still assuming

I was much stronger.

But I had no chance

Victory was impossible

Against the enemy’s lance

Hope wasn’t possible.

Now bound and chained

Tossed in the dungeon

Bruised and stained

Beaten by truncheon.

Then my heart

It met its error

In setting apart

Heart from its bearer

My King called my name

When a lowly serf

He laid claim

To my re-birth.

I cried out once more

“Fight by my side

Shake evil to the core

He will run and hide.

Break his spear

Sunder his shield

Under our cheer

He will flee the field.

Raise your banner

Ready your sword

With your mighty standard

Pierce the horde!”

My Lord picked me up

My wounds he nursed

He filled my cup

And quenched my thirst.

He broke my chains

And set me free

His mercy reigns

With bended knee.

Despite my resistance

Of my former state

He adorned my existence

With his breastplate.

Returning to war

We march on

On that chaotic shore

From dusk till dawn.

The enemy gives way

To our King

 From night to day

Our praises ring.

[Proverbs 3: 5-7] Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight. Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord and shun evil.

[Psalm 50: 14-15] “Sacrifice thank offerings to God, fulfill your vows to the Most High, and call on me in the day of trouble; I will deliver you, and you will honor me.”
