Do Not Be Anxious

Today’s Reading

Matthew 6:25-34

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?
28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. 33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

Take a Moment

Are you worried about anything? Take a moment to reflect on what is making you anxious and then consider how much bigger God is than them! In verse 26, Jesus says if the birds of the sky are surely fed by God, are you not of more value? Yes, you are! Trust that your Heavenly Father will provide for you. But, you must remember to do as verse 33 illustrates. Seek first his kingdom and his righteousness.

We waste so much energy and time worrying over small everyday things. We are commanded to give it all to God. Move over from the pilot’s seat and allow God to take over. I know if the choice of pilot was between me and God, I would laugh at the ridiculous idea that I am even an option. Then I’d sit my tush right down in the back (because I don’t even need to be in that co-pilot seat! God’s not going anywhere and He’s got it all under control!)

Stop overthinking things. Take a step back, spend time in prayer, and you will feel the peace that only God can give wash over you.

Now, does this mean we can just throw ourselves on the couch and binge-watch Friends on Netflix instead of working towards solutions? No, of course not. We are commanded to not be anxious, but not to stop trying. You have to study for that test to pass it, so study. Praying for wisdom daily will take you incredibly far in your everyday life as you strive to make the best decisions you can.
